Joe Fernando (CEEES/AME) is the National Science Foundation lead principal investigator for the joint European-American wind energy resource mapping project that is to be conducted in the Vale Cobrão, a valley nestled within a double ridge southeast of Porto, Portugal, near the town of Perdigão. The European lead principal investigator is Professor Jakob Mann of the Denmark technical University. Other US participants are the Cornell University, University of Colorado, Boulder, University of Oklahoma and University of California, Berkeley. National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) will provide field, data and logistical support for the US group. The ND co-investigator is the research assistant professor Dr. Laura Leo, and a group of CEEES researchers and graduate students will participate in the experiment. They include research scientist Dr. Raghu Krishnamurthy, graduate students Daniel Vassalo, Numan Sirin and Sebastian Otarola-Bustos, and field assistant Orson Jay Hyde.
The intense operational period of the project will start on the 1st of May 2017. The field operations with state-of-the-art in situ, remote sensing and unmanned aerial vehicle systems of unprecedented proportions will continue till June 15th, 2017. For more information, read....
